Tackling The Issue of Socialization and Homeschooling

By: thelma kellogg

There are many approaches that families can use if they choose to homeschool their children. There are many misconceptions about homeschooling, in part because it has evolved over the years. Many proponents of homeschooling believe that issues surrounding socialization are moot. They also that the healthy development of socialization has never actually been a problem for homeschooling. This very topic has been the subject of many studies for more than ten years. All these studies have concluded that home schooled children have a higher degree of socialization skills.

Home schooled children must be exposed to regular opportunities for socializing, as compared to kids who go to school, the everyday chances for this are more limited. Most modern schools are quite diverse when it comes to the races, religions and nationalities of children. A student at an American school will most likely be surrounded by other students representing dozens of cultures, nationalities, languages, etc. The other children at school give kids the chance to learn how their words and actions impact others in the "real world."

There is a difference between interacting with siblings and complete strangers. The type of environment in which there are people who are unknown provides opportunities unavailable at home.

Because 4-H clubs have been around for awhile, chances are, you've heard about them. They offer a wide selection of clubs for your child to join depending on their interests. And if they're interested, all of your children can become involved. 4-H clubs are a great way to introduce your children to others their age and they cost nothing to join. Children are better able to network than they have previously and this is due in great part to the internet. So it is more natural for the kids your children meet in 4-H clubs to introduce them to their friends.

One of the rather unhealthy aspects of socializing with peers the same age is that it helps to distort personal expression and development. This is obviously true when you consider what typically happens at public schools. Children generally want to be accepted and popular. They primarily do this by trying to fit in with their peers. This is what leads to the formation of cliques. The cost of this understandable behavior is often the kid's personal identity and expression.

We engage in some type of socialization activity every day. You will almost always interact with others as you go about the daily details of life. There are always chances to help your children hone their social skills. Taking them with you to do simple errands like getting groceries can provide meaningful experiences.
